WHAT IS STEVIA?
Stevia is a plant that, when processed, is 200 to 300 times sweeter than that of sugar for zero caloric value. Stevia belongs in the family of Asteraceae, in the form of a small shrub. The sweet extracts of stevia contains stéviol glycosides.
There are 2 main forms of stevia in the market. The first is powder. Stevia leaves are harvested and dried. Once dried, they are crushed, thus creating dried stevia powder. The sweetness of this powder is 10-15 times to that of typical sugar.
The second form of stevia is extract. Usually in the form of white powder, it is usually dissolved in water and is used to sweeten drinks. This form of stevia is up to 300 times sweeter than sugar.
Why is stevia an option?
One of the biggest advantages of stevia is that it has no caloric value, unlike sugar. This natural sweetener is therefore a good alternative to sugar and also to synthetic sweeteners. It is good for those who are trying to control their calorie intake. Considering that stevia is sweeter when compared to sugar, the quantities consumed are automatically lower. Controlling caloric intake can help fight certain diseases such as diabetes. Choosing stevia as a sweetener increases glucose tolerance and lowers blood levels. Stevia also has the advantage of containing many trace elements and vitamins. Its potassium content helps regulate blood pressure. Similarly, stevia tends to limit tooth decay since stevia inhibits the growth of bacteria.
